Let me begin by wishing a heartfelt Happy Mother\u2019s Day to all the moms, step-moms, bonus moms, fur-moms, and nurturing mother figures\u2014I see you. \ud83d\udc9b<\/p>\n\n

And because you are a woman\u2014a giver, a guide, a source of light in so many lives\u2014today feels like the perfect moment to talk about letting your light shine just a little bit brighter.<\/p>\n\n

And if you\u2019re not a mother? Don\u2019t worry\u2014this message is for you, too. You probably know a mother and every woman deserves to be reminded of her worth and her power.<\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ve learned that when you dare to show up fully as yourself, people will always have something to say.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ve been called a lot of things in my life\u2014some whispered behind my back, some spoken loud enough to sting.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cShe smiles too much.\u201d<\/em>
\u201cShe\u2019s too confident.\u201d<\/em>
\u201cShe dresses too nicely for a teacher. Who does she think she is?\u201d<\/em>
\u201cShe needs to tone it down.\u201d<\/em>
\u201cShe\u2019s intimidating.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n

And once\u2014yes, truly\u2014I was asked to stop wearing skirts because my legs were \u201ccausing complaints.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

I\u2019ve been criticized for showing up fully as myself. For speaking up. For shining a little too brightly. For smiling too much.<\/p>\n\n

But here\u2019s what I know to be true:
You can\u2019t dim the light of someone who learned to shine in the dark.<\/strong><\/p>\n
