{"id":20887,"date":"2019-10-14T05:00:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T09:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/strobeleducation.com\/?p=20887"},"modified":"2023-08-03T19:47:38","modified_gmt":"2023-08-03T19:47:38","slug":"the-importance-of-social-emotional-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/strobeleducation.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-social-emotional-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of Social Emotional Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>How a Social Curriculum Leads to Student Success<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though another school year seems to have only just recently gotten underway, you\u2019re probably already being inundated with directives to prep for, or teach to, your state\u2019s standardized tests. Right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know that the \u201c3 R\u2019s\u201d are vitally important skills, but there\u2019s a risk involved in focusing ONLY on academic standards. We\u2019re risking our students missing out on equally important lessons that can help develop strong emotional skills, character traits, and values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m talking about a social learning curriculum, or social emotional learning (SEL). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edsurge.com\/news\/2018-06-04-the-future-of-education-depends-on-social-emotional-learning-here-s-why\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s \u201cthe future of education\u201d!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Why? Because learning these critical skills during a child\u2019s development directly affects their success and happiness as an adult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And isn\u2019t that what it\u2019s all about? We should be teaching students not just to be good at school, but also <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good at life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The High Stakes &amp; High Stress of Standards<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standardized tests are high stakes and high stress for everyone involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Administrators feel pressured to get a gold star from the state so they can show they are a \u201cgood school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers are backed into a corner of teaching to the test\u2014and neglecting SEL\u2014to ensure students perform up to the level required by the powers that be. (And in some cases, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicschoolreview.com\/blog\/should-a-teachers-pay-be-influenced-by-student-test-scores\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their own pay and\/or tenure could be on the line!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students often experience stress and pressure from testing that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.iq.harvard.edu\/files\/eap\/files\/c._simpson_effects_of_testing_on_well_being_5_16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negatively impacts their physical and emotional well-being<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an ever-present frustration for educators. We KNOW there is so much more to educating a child than simply focusing on academic subjects. And yet, at every turn, it seems our hands are tied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large portions of our day are spent teaching left brain capabilities\u2014computation, language acquisition and communication, linear thinking, facts, logic, sequencing, memorizing, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creativity, innovation, autonomy, and SEL are barely allowed to take up space in our classrooms. Because, after all, state tests don\u2019t measure how creative little Johnny is!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And to some extent, I understand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m absolutely a proponent of incorporating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/strobeleducation.com\/workshops\/standards-based-grading-assessment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard-based grading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the classroom practice. I believe it\u2019s vital to define the skills and knowledge students should have at each grade level. Standards provide guidance to teachers, helping them to build lesson plans around a set of core concepts\u2014and to track progress accurately, effectively, and fairly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that our current system places an OUTSIZED value on these skills\u2014and seemingly these skills alone\u2014leaving out the social curriculum which is equally, if not more, important.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Crucial Importance of Social Curriculum<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.casel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ReadyToLead_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that there is significant data to support the importance of a social curriculum in schools. They cite statistics that show students who received SEL instruction performed, on average, 11 percentile points higher than students who did not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And a social curriculum provides benefits to individuals long after they\u2019ve left the classroom. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/education\/school\/UPDATED%20Social%20and%20Emotional%20Skills%20-%20Well-being,%20connectedness%20and%20success.pdf%20(website).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study from The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that certain social and emotional skills are strong indicators of success. And they further determined that a lack of SEL regularly correlated with increased chances of unemployment, divorce, poor health, criminal behavior, and imprisonment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s pretty compelling evidence that learning how to interact and empathize with others is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as important as learning to read and write!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Educating the Whole Child<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most important lessons we teach our students aren\u2019t the ones found within the confines of a textbook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should teach our students self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should teach them compassion and connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should teach them social awareness and emotional intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should teach them to understand their emotions and to communicate them effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the keys to success and how we educate the whole child. Because they\u2019re helping to build the grit, perseverance, and drive necessary to succeed in life. (This is why I think a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/strobeleducation.com\/workshops\/growth-mindset\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growth Mindset<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> curriculum is soooo important, too!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers need to have that same grit and perseverance. We need to do the scary thing and say that a social curriculum is just as important as academic standards.
